hmm... well obviosuly the fireflies are christmas lights and... well considering they are weeping I guess they must be sad but that last stanza.... hmm... I donno maybe you're tryign to say that to much happiness can cause much more depression? maybe you're saying that because one emotion without another can be as unfulfilling and/or just too intense for any man or woman who has only only one emotion..

The first two lines of the last grouping seems a bit akward to me, but I love the mood of the poem. It's interesting.

Welll ... basically...

As you said, the fireflies represent christmas lights. The fact that the christmas lights are 'entertaining the nation' is saying that the nation is becoming more and more absorbed in things like christmas lights, etc.

The fireflies, as they're a personified form of christmas lights, therefore have emotion. They can see, then, that the nation is becoming more and more absorbed by them, and so don't want to continue shining (I explain why later) - However, more and more are being forced to be 'alight' each year, for longer and longer periods, until it's almost as if they're being whipped into continuing being alight to please the needs of the nation.

The fireflies realise that what they are doing is that they're detracting from the real happiness, spirit, and cause for celebration that is supposed to lie behind Christmas, and so are saddened. However, because the rest of the nation has spent so long staring into the lights, they've almost been completely 'blinded' by them, and thus have lost the other parts of Christmas to the consumerism etc. that the christmas lights are supposed to represent.

I guess it's kinda' subtle.
